The development of an exemplary management plan for the restoration of upland and wetland ecosystems in the Chickasawhatchee Swamp Wildlife Management Area is a goal for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GA DNR) in partnership with the J. W. Jones Ecological Research Center. To examine opportunities for restoration of uplands, wetlands, and ecotonal sites, potential ecological community types on the site must be identified, mapped, and developed. To accomplish this, we are utilizing and adapting a hierarchically-derived ecological site classification developed by the Center for Ichauway. Information will be gathered on land-use history, adjacent land-uses and contemporary land-use practices, site-specific hydrologic data, soil mapping, vegetation characterization, and rare species inventory and used in developing the management plan.
Research in progress, publications forthcoming.
