There are nearly 50 plants and animals at Ichauway that are considered threatened,
endangered, or species of special concern at the state or national level.
Many of these species are associated with fire-maintained seasonal wetlands
and longleaf pine forests, as well as creeks and rivers. The extensive natural
habitats at Ichauway afford a unique opportunity to study rare species in
an undisturbed landscape. In addition, the active management approach taken
at Ichauway allows scientists to address applied research questions directly
related to management and conservation of rare species.
